Biographical Insight

Roosevelt Terrance Joyner, B.A., M.Div., D.Min.

A visionary leader, teacher, builder, manager, and spiritual advisor, the Reverend Dr. Roosevelt Terrance Joyner is the founder and pastor of Koinonia Baptist Church, Inc. He is a man of God who preaches the Word in and out of season. He is guided by the Holy Spirit and makes a difference in the lives of his members and those around him.

He is the son of the late Mr. Claude L. Joyner, Sr. and the late Mrs. Sallie Dandridge Joyner. He is the husband of Mrs. Carolyn Y. Mason-Joyner and the father of nine children and twenty-two grandchildren.

A native Memphian, Dr. Joyner is a product of the Memphis City Schools System graduating from Booker T. Washington High School. He attended Tennessee State University and has a Bachelor of Science Degree from Christian Brothers University.

He has a Masters Degree from Memphis Theological Seminary, a Doctor of Ministry Degree from Saint Paul School of Theology, Kansas City, Missouri and an Honorary Dr. of Divinity from the Tennessee Baptist School of Religion. Pastor Joyner completed a critical study of the aging Black poor in Memphis, Tennessee.

In addition to serving as administrator for two thriving business entities, Dr. Joyner also serves in the following capacities: owner of Joyner Management and Leasing, founding board member of Friendship Investments, MemphisFirst now Landmark Corporation, and an investor and former board member of MemphisFirst Community Bank.

In 1989 he founded Koinonia Child Care Learning Center and in 1994 Koinonia Charter and Tours, Inc. was established offering Dr. Joyner the opportunity to gain experience and expertise in transportation. In 2004 he served as the Transportation Chairman for the National Baptist Congress of Christian Education. In 2009 and in 2015 he is serving as Transportation Chairman for the National Baptist Convention USA, Inc. He serves as Dean of the Tennessee Regular BM&E Congress of Leadership Training, former Moderator of the Baptist General District Association, former vice president of the Memphis District Association Christian Education Congress, and a former board member of the Graduate Council of St. Paul School of Theology. He is the immediate Past President of the Memphis Baptist Ministerial Association, a member of the Memphis Better Business Bureau, Ministers Alliance, Memphis Baptist Ministerial Association past Vice President, Tennessee BM&E Convention, Tennessee Regular BM&E Convention, National Baptist Convention, U.S.A. Inc., NAACP Life Member the Hillcrest and Whitehaven Neighborhood Associations and a member of the City of Memphis Ecumenical Advisory Board. The Memphis City Council honored him in 1999 with the naming of Millbranch Street as the Dr. Roosevelt T. Joyner Boulevard.
